FOTZ Guided Tours

TourThe FOTZ Volunteer Guide Service offers a range of tours across Victoria's 3 great Zoos:

Melbourne Zoo

  • General Tours - take you on a guided walking tour of the public area(s) of the Zoo tailored to meet your specific interests (up to 90mins). For family / adhoc groups - Booking recommended, but may be available on the day subject to availability.  For large Group or Organised tours - Bookings essential (7 days notice).
  • Guidemobile Tours - FOTZ operates a small buggy  specifically designed to carry up to 3 visitors with impaired mobility around most public area(s) of the Zoo (up to 90mins). Bookings essential (14 days notice)
  • Vision Impaired Tours - A specially trained group of guides provide tours for visitors with impaired vision. These tours provide an audio description and focus on sounds, smells and tactile experiences (up to 90mins). Bookings essential (7 days notice)
  • Horticultural Tours - Melbourne Zoo has a rich horticultural history from its beginnings in 1862 and valueable experiences to share in these water conscious times (up to 90mins). Bookings essential (7 days notice)

Healesville Sanctuary

  • General Tours - take you on a guided walk through the wildlife reserve (1 or 2 hour tours available). Bookings recommended (24-48 hours notice).
  • Guidemobile Tours - FOTZ operates a vehicle suitable for carrying visitors with impaired mobility through the wildlife reserve. Bookings essential (24-48 hours notice).
  • Vision Impaired Tours - A trained, select group of guides provide tours for visitors with impaired vision. These tours place a focus on sounds, smells and tactile experience. Guide dogs are permitted within the Sanctuary but not within the animal enclosures. Bookings essential (7 days notice recommended)

Werribee Open Range Zoo

  • The Pula Conservation Walk - takes visitors through an African Village and on an adventure to visit such animals as Vervet monkeys, lions, meerkats, hippos, cheetahs, zebra, waterbuck and ostrich.
  • The Australian Volcanic Plains Walk - allows you to mingle with native Australian animals such as kangaroos wallabies and emus. Native waterbirds, grasses and plants are also a feature.

How much notice is required to organise a tour?Small family/adhoc group tours can be organised on the day but are dependant on guide availability. Bookings are essential for organised or large group tours - 7 days notice required
Bookings are usually required 24 - 48 hours in advance
Can be booked on the day depending on the tour & availability. Bookings recommended.
What time of day do the tours operate?

Mon - Fri 10:30am - 3:00pm (Last booking 2:00pm)

Sat - Sun 10:00am - 12:00pm.

Impromptu tours are subject to guide availability.

Call Healesville Sanctuary on (03) 5957 2800 to book a quided tour. Tours on the day can be arranged at the ticket office.
Book your tour through the ticket office or with the Guide on Duty on the day of your visit.
Guidemobiles for the mobility impaired.

The Guidemobile is available for parties of up to 3 at a time.

Guidemobiles are subject to availability. Visitors accessing this service must be able to step into and out of the vehicle independently. Note guidemobile access to some areas of the zoos is limited. Guidemobiles are driven at walking pace, so family, friends or carers can accompany the tour on foot.
