Dokkoon's Baby Goes on Show!

Dokkoon & Baby ElephantVictorian families will have the chance to see Melbourne Zoo's baby elephant for the first time tomorrow, Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings announced today.

The latest addition to the Melbourne Zoo was born in the early hours of January 16 and is the first baby elephant born at the Zoo in its 148 year history.

Baby Elephant

From the 10th February, 2010 visitors are able to see the baby at different times during the day. Viewing times will be limited at first, because the calf is so young.   She is also gradually being introduced to the adult females in the herd, so her day includes meet-and-greet sessions with Num-Oi and Kulab, another expectant mother, due in August/September.   As the introduction process progresses, the calf viewing times will gradually increase.

The Zoo appreciates the community's patience in waiting to see Dokkoon's baby.
